At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council adopted a new library development concept for the period up to 2030. This sets out objectives and tasks for low-threshold access to information, education, cultural education, social and digital participation, social cohesion and sustainable urban development.
Specific measures include increasing the media budget from the current 411,000 euros to 430,000 euros in order to meet the rising production costs for print media, as well as the increasing expectations of users for e-books, e-papers and other digital resources. In addition, the media layout is to be reorganised so that related subject areas are grouped together, making the search for media more intuitive. In addition, the environmental library is to be relocated from the city planning office to the city library and will in future be housed in the expanded neighbourhood library in the Yorck area, which is to be further developed as a "green library". Other measures include greater involvement of schoolchildren and preschoolers, further digital development and more active participation by the city library as a platform for civic engagement. The total costs amount to around 630,000 euros, of which around 500,000 euros are already included in the current budget.
This is not an update of the previous concept from 2017 to 2022, as the library institution has been undergoing major changes for years and is increasingly developing into an information and communication centre that focuses less on the medium and more on people. The city library is thus expanding its importance as a "third place" where media, information, educational and cultural services come together.
