At its meeting today, the City Council of Chemnitz adopted the fee schedule for the use of the bicycle garages. This means that the trial operation in the three bicycle garages, which has been running since December 2023, will be transferred to regular operation.
The new tariffs will apply from 1 October 2025 and provide for a sliding scale of usage fees according to the rental period. In future, it will be possible to book short-term, daily and long-term use for up to one month. The fees start at 0.50 euros for a parking period of up to 2 hours and go up to 15 euros for a monthly booking.
Examples from the new tariff:
- up to 2 hours: 0.50 euros
- over 2 to 8 hours: 1 euro
- 1 day (up to 24 hours): 2 euros
- 1 week: 7 euros
- 1 month: 15 euros
In addition, there is a contractual penalty of 59.50 euros for breaches of the house rules and a service fee of 130.90 euros if bicycles have to be handed over to the lost property office by the City of Chemnitz.
Payment is made exclusively digitally. Additional transaction fees of currently 4.5 per cent of the fee are charged for each booking and are collected by the operator.
The fees are based on standard market prices in other German cities. The marketability of the new tariffs will be evaluated after twelve months.
Background
In 2023, the city of Chemnitz set up three bicycle garages, each with 16 bicycle boxes. They are located at the following sites
- Bahnhofstraße 1 (forecourt of the main railway station)
- Street of Nations 12
- Reichenhainer Straße 90 (TU Chemnitz, campus)
The construction of the facilities was funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Free State of Saxony as part of the "Stadt und Land" programme.
In test operation since December 2023, an average of around 900 people per year have used the bicycle garages, with significant differences between the locations: While it is mainly short-term parkers who park their bikes for four to eight hours in the city centre, the average parking time at the main station is between 14 and 20 hours.
