City council adopts climate protection concept
The integrated climate protection concept is based on broad participation. For example, eight housing companies, two private landlords' associations, the tenants' association, the Chemnitz Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Federal Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises were involved. In addition, GRÜNE LIGA, BUND, NABU and the AGENDA advisory board as well as the allotment garden advisory board, the board of trustees for urban design and, last but not least, citizens have influenced the concept that has now been adopted by submitting comments. In addition to the comments, the current concept also incorporates the results of the actual state analysis as part of the participation in the European Energy Award.
The concept describes municipal fields of action such as the consistent harmonisation of urban development and climate protection goals, issues of securing resources, increasing energy efficiency and strengthening environmentally friendly mobility. However, industry, trade and commerce, agriculture and forestry as well as private households are also addressed. Measures are to be developed and evaluated on the basis of the concept.
The city of Chemnitz has been actively working on climate-friendly urban development for around 20 years. The milestones of this work include the energy concept in 1993, the decision to introduce climate reports in 2000 and the decision to participate in the certification process for the European Energy Award in 2009. The integrated climate protection concept represents a further fundamental step in this area.
