City council adopts addendum to the budget bylaws
City of Chemnitz invests €41.6 million in broadband expansion in previously underserved neighbourhoods with comprehensive funding commitment
At its meeting today, the city council adopted a supplementary statute to the budget statute for the 2017/2018 biennial budget. The amendment was made necessary by the allocation of funding for broadband expansion.
The City of Chemnitz will receive a total of around €36.4 million in funding - around €20.2 million (50 per cent of the requested project amount) from the federal government and around €16.2 million (40 per cent) from the Free State. In addition, the city of Chemnitz is investing its own funds totalling 5.2 million euros (10 percent). The total costs of the planned construction measures therefore amount to around 41.6 euros.
In light of the fact that the federal and state governments are providing a considerable amount of funding for the expansion of nationwide broadband infrastructure in "underserved" areas, the city of Chemnitz has defined these "underserved" urban areas in a market exploration procedure. The analysis carried out included the current broadband supply/broadband offers, expansion plans and market consultations with relevant telecommunications companies and potential investors. In addition, the necessary subsidy requirements for investment in the infrastructure were estimated. On this basis, the corresponding funding applications were submitted, which related in particular to the districts of KIaffenbach, Einsiedel, Altenhain, Euba, Wittgensdorf, Furth, Borna Heinersdorf, Rottluff and Adelsberg.
