City council adopts a development concept for the zoo
At its meeting yesterday, the city council approved a development concept for Chemnitz Zoo. Provided that the necessary budget funds are available in future, the popular leisure facility is to be made even more attractive step by step over the next few years. The city council had previously commissioned the administration to analyse the current state of the zoo and to formulate goals for its development, particularly in the areas of species protection, zoo education, profile, public relations, green design and construction. A working group made up of representatives from the administration, parliamentary groups and external consultants previously discussed development strategies for the zoo. The paper now available also shows which renovations and investments need to be made in order to make the zoo more attractive for visitors.
The concept includes the construction of a new entrance building on Nevoigtstraße. It is to include visitor information, a zoo shop and sanitary facilities as well as a catering area.
Chemnitz Zoo's unique selling point, its amphibian collection, will be emphasised more strongly. The concept also focusses on facilities such as the predator land, the monkey hill, a small (night) animal house, the ungulate mountain as well as the flamingo house, the bird meadow and the duck pond. The zoo school is also set to become even more important. The zoo will also have more play facilities as well as picnic and rest areas. And a new guidance system will provide visitors with quick orientation. Additional enclosures are to be built and old ones renovated. This is the prerequisite for the planned modern presentation of new animal species. This is also to be achieved through additional observation points as well as commented feedings or short and themed tours. These offers will enable visitors to learn more about individual species in future.
The concept shows projects that can be realised quickly or at low cost, as well as medium and longer-term projects with higher financial expenditure.
With their resolution on Wednesday, the city councillors instructed the administration to regularly inform the culture committee about the updating and implementation of the zoo concept.
