City budget approved - construction projects can begin

The budget of the City of Chemnitz for the current year has been approved by the State Directorate of Saxony. This was subject to further cost-cutting measures in order to balance the city's budget by 2015. The second package of the development and consolidation concept was approved by the city council in July. This means that outstanding investment measures for 2012 can be tackled immediately. These include the invitation to tender for construction work at the Ludwig-Richter-Straße daycare centre, the music school, the renovation of the Sachsenhalle, as well as the resurfacing of a whole series of road sections. Major infrastructure measures such as the expansion of Zschopauer Straße were not affected by the pending budget approval.

The resurfacing of the southern ring road between Usti nad Labem street and the printing house has already begun. This was necessary so that the Neefestraße construction project could be completed during the school holidays. Some measures coordinated with ESC and eins have also already begun: Hofer Straße Mittelbach, W.-Busch-Straße, Klaffenbacher Hauptstraße and the H.-Vieth-Weg.

Further measures in 2012:

  • Barrier-free conversion of the Flemmingstraße terminus (centre for the blind), start of construction at the end of October
  • Renewal/optimisation of the Dresdner/Fürstenstraße traffic light system

Repairs to the surfaces of numerous road sections will begin in September and will be completed in stages. A total of around 1.5 million euros will be invested in the repair of the roads:

  • Lützowstraße between Horststraße and Irkutsker Straße (from 3 September)
  • Hainstraße between Palmstraße and Forststraße (from 3 September)
  • Kochstraße between Waldenburger Straße and Weststraße (from 06.09.)
  • Dresdner Straße between the hospital access road and Weißer Weg (from 21/09)
  • Limbacher Straße between Mühlberg and Jugendweg
  • Neukirchner Straße between Siedlerweg and An der Luthereiche
  • Blankenauer Straße between Lohrstraße and Emilienstraße
  • Südring between Saydaer Straße and Reichenhainer Straße
  • Zeisigwaldstraße between Bayernring and H.-Schütz-Straße
  • Wolgograder Allee between M.-Opitz-Straße and Stollberger Straße
  • Barbarossastraße between HNr. 22 and Weststraße

It is no longer possible to start construction in 2012 on the following measures this year; construction is scheduled to start at the beginning/spring of 2013:

  • New bridge construction on Markersdorfer Straße over CVAG railway tracks
  • Wiesenstraße footpath construction (upgrading of Reitbahnviertel)

Building construction measures

  • Music school (construction decision currently in progress)
  • Ludwig-Richter-Straße daycare centre (start of construction approx. February 2013)
  • Neukirchner Str. 7 daycare centre (planning services, construction decision I. Quarter 2013, start of construction 2013)
  • Refurbishment of Sachsenhalle (start of construction approx. November 2012)
