Christmas tree on the market is cut down
Date: Monday, 9 January, from 1 p.m. at the Chemnitz market
Next Monday, 9 January, at lunchtime, the Christmas tree on Chemnitz market square will be cut down. From 1 p.m., the City of Chemnitz's green spaces department will "get to grips" with the trunk using a large chainsaw.
After felling, the trunk will be stored and later used for repairs to benches or playgrounds, for example. The greenery benefits Chemnitz Zoo. It is mainly used for the enclosure design. It is mainly used for decoration and to keep the animals occupied. Some animals, such as camels and deer, also eat it.
For eight weeks, the approximately 27 metre high spruce decorated the market and the Christmas market. The city thus had the tallest "Christmas tree" in central Germany, according to a survey by the MDR magazine "Umschau" of the 15 largest cities in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia on the central Christmas trees in their city centres.
