Christmas tree for this year’s Christmas market arrives
On Saturday, 7 November, in the late afternoon, this year’s Christmas tree for the Chemnitz Christmas market will arrive at the market square.
Once again this year, the tree will be felled by staff from Techno-Farm und Service GmbH, transported on a flatbed lorry on a journey lasting several hours along motorways and main roads, and erected on Chemnitz’s market square.
The delivery traditionally marks the start of preparations for the Christmas market.
Those interested can once again pass the time whilst waiting for the tree to arrive in Chemnitz by enjoying barbecued food and mulled wine at the market.
This year’s Christmas tree comes from the Adorf forest district near Schöneck/Vogtland. The stately spruce, approximately 26 metres tall, is estimated to be 80 years old. Its exact age can only be determined after felling by examining the annual rings.
Around 23 metres of the spruce will then be visible at Chemnitz market, as the tree will, as usual, be securely anchored in a three-metre-deep ground sleeve.
The search for a visually appealing, evenly grown tree with a healthy canopy of needles – one that is also sturdy enough to be decorated with fairy lights – proved once again to be very difficult. Due to the weather conditions of recent years and the commercial use of trees, trees that meet these requirements and are available have become significantly rarer.
