Christmas spruce is expected
Pre-Christmas event with mulled wine, bratwurst and children's carousel on Saturday, 12 November
The pre-Christmas period in Chemnitz begins every year in mid-November with the erection of the large Christmas spruce on the market square by the town hall.
The date this year is next Saturday, 12 November. A magnificent spruce, this time around 27 metres tall, is expected to be erected here in the late afternoon.
If everything goes "like clockwork" with the felling, loading and transport, then the arrival of the low-loader accompanied by emergency services from the Chemnitz-Erzgebirge police department can be expected from 4 p.m. at the earliest. As last year, the transport route in Chemnitz leads from the Chemnitz/Mitte junction via the B 95/Leipziger Straße, Hartmannstraße, Theaterstraße into Innere Klosterstraße to the market.
Until the tree arrives, the waiting time can once again be used for a pre-Christmas event organised by the market authorities: with barbecue and mulled wine fun including a children's carousel for the youngest. So there will be plenty of entertainment - even if the tree transport is a little late.
The "main protagonist", the Chemnitz Christmas spruce 2016, is around 80 years old and about 27 metres high. As is well known, the exact age and length can only be determined after the tree has been felled by counting the annual rings and measuring it at ground level.
With these measurements, Chemnitz is sure to be well ahead again in the annual Christmas tree ranking in Saxony.
The 2016 Chemnitz Christmas tree was selected by the City of Chemnitz's Parks Department in collaboration with the Tannenhaus forest district near Schöneck.
The contracted company Techno-Farm und Service GmbH from Adorf fells the giant tree. The experienced company was awarded the contract following an invitation to tender.
The octagonal round bench created by employees of the Parks Department and built from local English oak will also be reinstalled and invites visitors to linger under the tree.
