"Children's rights are not child's play"
Children and Youth Representatives: Activities for World Children's Day on 20 September, from 3 to 5.30 pm, at three playgrounds - 4 to 5 pm Citizens' Dialogue *
On Wednesday, 20 September - World Children's Day - from 3 to 5.30 p.m., Ute Spindler, Children and Youth Representative of the City of Chemnitz, will be taking part in the "Children's rights are not child's play" campaign organised by the German Parity Welfare Association (Landesverband Sachsen e. V., Chemnitz regional office). She will find out about ways to eradicate child poverty, as well as measures to implement educational opportunities on site and explore the question of what the children and the organisers actually need for this task.
Special activities for children will take place at the three playgrounds "Markersdorfer Oase" (Wolgograder Allee 27), "Luisenplatz" (Luisenplatz 4) and "Bunte Gärten" (Martinstraße 18). From 4 to 5 p.m., there will be a citizens' dialogue at the "Bunte Gärten" playground, where representatives of local politics are invited to answer questions from parents, professionals and children. *

Ute Spindler, Children and Youth Commissioner of the City of Chemnitz: "Child poverty is also educational poverty and a frightening reality in the Federal Republic of Germany. Various surveys show that one in five children in our country lives below the poverty line. The children affected are disadvantaged in many ways. It is often difficult to finance school meals, daycare centre fees, extra tuition and/or leisure activities. Children who suffer increasingly complain about health problems. They show social and emotional problems twice as often as their peers from secure economic backgrounds. Very often, the visible consequence is poorer opportunities for professional and social advancement."
