Children's opera celebrates its premiere at the municipal music school
"Brundibár" by Hans Krása has seven performances until mid-November
On Sunday 30 October at 4.30 pm, the children's opera "Brundibár" by Hans Krása will celebrate its premiere in the concert hall of the Chemnitz Municipal Music School. The Chemnitz production of the 1943 Theresienstadt version is a co-operation between Chemnitz Opera and the Municipal Music School, where the performances will also take place.
Hans Krása's children's opera "Brundibár" is more than just an enchanting story about the power of childlike courage and community spirit. Composed in 1938, the piece could initially only be performed in secret in a Jewish children's home in Prague. After the composer was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, he wrote it down again and rehearsed it with the imprisoned children in the camp. It was performed there more than 50 times. Although Hans Krása, like many of the children involved, fell victim to the National Socialist regime, "Brundibár" was saved from oblivion and has been performed in both professional theatres and schools since the 1980s.
The premiere on 30 October at the Municipal Music School is already sold out. Further performances are planned for 31 October (11.30 am), 1 November (10.30 am), 6 November (4.30 pm), 7 November (10.30 am), 14 November (10.30 am) and 15 November (10.30 am). Tickets cost 12 euros and are available at www.theater-chemnitz.de.
