Professional childcare and early support for all children are among the most important tasks for the future. In order to realise the desire for family and children and to be able to reconcile this with professional requirements, needs-based childcare services, good quality and a variety of providers must be guaranteed.
Chemnitz currently has a total of 222 day care centres, including childminders. Specifically, these are 77 facilities run by local authorities, 78 by independent organisations and 67 day care centres. Due to the current and predicted increase in the number of births and the legal entitlement to a childcare place, the demand for daycare services will continue to rise in the coming years. The city will therefore be expanding the area of childminders in the coming year and is looking for applicants for this service.
Rising birth rates - expansion of services
The number of births in Chemnitz is steadily increasing. While 2019 babies saw the light of day in 2011, in 2013 there were already 2123 girls and boys.
Based on the past three years, the average take-up rate of a place for children aged three to under seven in Chemnitz is 96 per cent. For children aged two months to under three years, 43.4 per cent of parents in 2012 and 48.3 per cent in 2014 used childcare in a nursery or daycare centre. This corresponds to an increase of 4.9 per cent in the crèche sector, 0.1 per cent in the nursery sector and 2.2 per cent in the after-school sector.
Currently (as of 30 June 2014), 2,671 children in Chemnitz are looked after in a crèche, 7,431 children in a daycare centre and 6,433 attend an after-school care centre.

In addition, since August 2013 there has been a legal entitlement to early childhood support in a day care centre or in child day care from the age of one. In order to secure this legal entitlement and guarantee it on an ongoing basis, it is necessary to expand the number of places in daycare centres as well as in childminders.
As a particularly flexible and family-orientated form of childcare, childminders play a central role here.
Since 2009, the number of child day care places has been continuously increased. For 2014, 325 places are already available, spread across 67 childminders. An increase of 75 places to 400 places has been factored into the demand planning for 2015. This will require 15 new childminders from January 2015.
The Youth Welfare Office of the City of Chemnitz is therefore launching an advert today to recruit childminders from Chemnitz. An advertising campaign for this advert also begins today. The City of Chemnitz is being supported by Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG). From 1 to 10 October, posters advertising childminders will be displayed on CVAG buses and trains.
Future childminders should have a qualification as a state-recognised educator. Proof or a declaration of willingness to attend a course to become a qualified childminder is also possible. Applicants also like to deal with current pedagogical content of education, upbringing and care, are reliable, flexible, co-operative and have creative skills.
Day carers are committed to continuous quality development, including through appropriate further training, and are open to professional advice. The work as a childminder is freelance. It is individualised education, upbringing and care for each child. The care mandate is equivalent to that of a daycare centre.
The day care centre can look after up to five children and can be set up in the childminder's own home, if sufficient space is available, or in suitable rented premises.

Positive response from parents and daycare centres to the daycare portal
The City of Chemnitz's daycare centre portal, which was launched in June, has had a consistently positive experience and response so far. With this online service, the City of Chemnitz offers parents the opportunity to make a pre-selection for their child's childcare according to their family's individual needs and to register for the waiting list from the comfort of their own home.
Without exception, all daycare centre providers were in favour of the place and occupancy management system. As a result, all daycare centres in Chemnitz and all childminders have been integrated into the system so that parents actually have a complete overview at their disposal. This is the first service of its kind in Saxony.
To date, 2,522 users of the daycare centre portal have been registered, which has led to 712 registrations for various desired facilities. The figures reflect the positive response from Chemnitz families. The daycare centre providers and managers also see the advantage of the system in making the necessary administrative work considerably more effective. This is all the more important in view of demographic developments.
