Chemnitz Zoo: Seven in one go
Offspring among the mini pigs in the farm enclosure
The mini pigs on the farm have seven offspring, four boars and three sows.
The young animals are already very agile and are also out and about in the outdoor enclosure, even without their mother.
The domestic pig breed "Göttinger Minischwein" was bred in the early 1960s through targeted crossbreeding at the University of Göttingen. The aim was to create a particularly small breed of pig specifically for experimental purposes, as humans and pigs are physiologically very similar. In the meantime, however, the mini pigs have also become very popular as pets, which is why there is a wide variety of colours.
As cute as the little ones are and as tempting as contact with them is, they, like all other zoo animals, are not allowed to be fed by visitors. The young animals are fed by the parent animals, and the animal keepers take care of the parent animals. The feed pellets from the vending machines are intended exclusively for the goats.
