Following the official detection of avian influenza at Chemnitz Zoo last Saturday, Chemnitz Zoo will be able to reopen in time for the start of the winter holidays next Friday, 6 February.
Following the discovery of two dead chickens in the goose and duck pond on Thursday, avian influenza was detected in 51 of a total of 67 birds in this pond. As a result, the entire flock in the goose and duck pond was painlessly killed by injection anaesthesia at the weekend. The results of the other bird populations at Chemnitz Zoo were all negative. A total of 286 birds were tested for bird flu at Chemnitz Zoo.
In order to prevent the further spread of bird flu at Chemnitz Zoo, the safety precautions that have been put in place will remain in place for a further three weeks. This means that the birds will continue to be separated into groups and managed strictly separately. The stabling and the additionally protected bird cages will also remain in place. The area around the goose and duck pond must be cleaned and disinfected and will therefore be cordoned off to visitors. Due to these precautions, not all animals will be on display at Chemnitz Zoo and admission prices will be adjusted.
All visitors must observe the disinfection measures on site. Access to the zoo is via so-called epidemic mats. These are used to disinfect the soles of visitors' shoes. The paws of dogs visiting the zoo must also be disinfected. In addition to the disinfectant mats, disinfectant spray or wipes are also available for this purpose.
