Chemnitz Zoo receives new entrance area

Excess funds for the design of the entrance area of the zoo

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to provide 300,000 euros for the design of the entrance area of the zoo.

The city council had already approved the zoo concept "Masterplan Tierpark Chemnitz 2030+" in 2018 to increase the zoo's attractiveness. The investments for the corresponding remodelling of the zoo according to the master plan amount to a total of approx. 40 million euros. These funds are being discussed in the current 2021/2022 budget planning.

As a cultural institution of the city, the zoo is also to play a role in the bid for the European Capital of Culture 2025. The additional funds will be used for the design of the new entrance area of the zoo in order to ensure significant construction progress by 2025.

The surplus funds are available due to additional revenue from the general and investment-related key allocations for 2020 that the City of Chemnitz received from the state of Saxony. The expected key allocations for 2020 were already planned in 2018 due to the two-year plan. At that time, the economic situation, population development and tax capacity of the City of Chemnitz as well as the total revenue could not yet be accurately estimated.

In addition, the so-called key mass of the Free State was increased compared to 2019 from the 2018 settlement. The key mass serves as the starting point for calculating the key allocations for the respective municipality.
