Chemnitz Zoo opens two new enclosures
Kulan facility extended and new Oman cat enclosure completed - Opening of the new circular trail - Invitation for the media on 12 April, 2 p.m.
Two new animal enclosures will be opened at Chemnitz Zoo for Easter: the extension of the Kulan enclosure with the new circular path and the Oman cat enclosure, which marks the completion of the remodelling of the small cat enclosure.
Media representatives are invited to a press event with Mayor Miko Runkel on Wednesday 12 April at 2 pm. The meeting point is in the area in front of the Anoa enclosure, where the new circular path begins.
An additional enclosure had become necessary for the culans and other equine species, in which the stallion, for example, can be separated. It is designed in such a way that it can be connected to the existing enclosures for the kulans and Somali wild asses. In addition, two dead ends on the visitor path were removed and a new circular path was built to make the entire area more interesting and attractive.
The so-called small cat ring was built back in the 1980s and the enclosures no longer met the minimum requirements. As part of the remodelling of the facility, a new animal species, the manul, was also introduced to the zoo in 2015. The enclosures for the Oman cats have now been completed and consist of several connected enclosures and a small warm house that can be seen from the outside.
The Oman cat is a subspecies of the wild cat. It is found in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. This subspecies is rarely seen in zoological gardens.
Culans have been kept and bred at the zoo since the 1970s. They belong to the half-donkey family and were once widespread across large parts of Asia, but today only small, dwindling populations remain.
