Chemnitz Zoo: Meerkats have offspring
Programme over Easter and during the Easter holidays in the zoo and wildlife park
The meerkats, which are among the visitors' favourites at Chemnitz Zoo, have had a new baby, which can now be seen outdoors. The animal keepers discovered the young on 12 February.
Like most carnivores, meerkats are nest-builders, which means that they only leave the protective den in which they were born after a certain period of time. In addition, meerkats still have their eyes and ears closed at birth. These only open after around two weeks.
In the meantime, the youngsters are busy exploring the enclosure - always under the watchful eyes of the family members. All the animals in the colony take part in rearing the youngest offspring. The young animal also retreats to one of the caves for a break, where it is still suckled by its mother.
With the current offspring, the group now comprises ten animals. In the wild, these very sociable animals can live together in colonies of up to 40 individuals.
Easter and Easter holidays in the zoo and wildlife park
There's plenty going on again at Chemnitz Zoo and Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park over the Easter weekend. On Good Friday, every child who visits the zoo will receive a small treat (while stocks last). The zookeepers will also be creating an Easter chick enclosure on the farm.
The zoo will also be open from Friday to Sunday, 29 to 31 March, until 6 pm. From Monday, 1 April, the summer opening hours will apply until 7 pm. The ticket office closes one hour earlier.
From Good Friday, 29 March up to and including Sunday, 7 April, the popular show feedings will take place again at the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park: on Mondays and Saturdays with the wolves and lynx, on Tuesdays and Fridays with the mouflons, on Wednesdays with the bison and on Thursdays and Sundays with the wildcats.
On Easter Sunday, 31 March at 10 a.m., the annual big Easter egg hunt starts in the game enclosure. Will all the eggs hidden by the Easter bunny be found?
Please note that the wildlife park only opens at 10 am on this day. In addition, every child who visits the game reserve on Easter Sunday will receive a small treat (while stocks last).
