Both the meerkats (Suricata suricatta) and the stone curlews (Burhinus oedicnemus oedicnemus) have welcomed new arrivals. Whilst the young meerkats are now busily exploring their enclosure, chicks have recently hatched among the oedcnems – a species of bird from the plover family.

Second litter of meerkats this year
Three lively baby meerkats were born on 20 June. This marks the second time this year that this lively species has had a litter. During the first few weeks, the young remained well protected in their underground burrow. Now, however, they have become curious and regularly venture outside. This gives visitors the chance to watch the young meerkats on their first explorations.
Meerkats are among the crowd favourites at Chemnitz Zoo. Their distinctive social behaviour, the typical division of labour within the group and the famous ‘lookout posts’ fascinate visitors of all ages.
Two Triel chicks have hatched
On 7 August, two chicks hatched from the European crake eggs and can now be seen in their enclosure.
The European crake is a master of camouflage. When in danger, it first presses itself flat against the ground and then usually attempts to flee on foot. In doing so, it often runs away with its neck stretched out in front of it. If it subsequently remains crouched, its plumage blends almost completely with its surroundings.
Nightjars are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal. During the breeding season, however, they are also active during the day. Their unique way of life is also evident in their reproductive behaviour: the clutch usually consists of two, rarely three, eggs. The incubation period lasts around 25 to 27 days. The chicks are precocial and leave the nest shortly after hatching. They are able to fly at around four weeks and are independent at approximately eight weeks.
The arrival of new arrivals among the meerkats and triels once again highlights the diversity of Chemnitz Zoo, which offers visitors a unique insight into the development and upbringing of the young animals.
