Chemnitz tram network is being expanded
Expansion planned in the direction of Zeisigwald and Reichenbrand
The tram network in Chemnitz is to be extended both to the west and to the north-east. This was decided by the city council at its meeting today.
The Zeisigwald (Straße der Nationen / August-Bebel-Straße / Palmstraße / Heinrich-Schütz-Straße / Zeisigwaldklinik Bethanien) and Reichenbrand (Zwickauer Straße between Guerickestraße and Reichenbrand church) lines are to be built, provided the necessary funds are secured in the budget. For the route to Reichenbrand, possible additional end points beyond Reichenbrand Church are to be analysed and considered as part of the preliminary planning.
Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) has been instructed by the resolution, in accordance with the public service contract (ÖDA, point 14 and Annex 5), to drive forward the technical planning initially up to the design planning stage. In addition, it is to take all necessary steps to be included in the funding programme in accordance with the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG).
With both extensions, trams and cars would share the carriageway with an expected width of 6.50 m (status: feasibility study from 2020). Traffic lights would be used to ensure that the tram would be the leader of the pack (a group of vehicles), thus guaranteeing swift progress for all modes of transport. In addition, cycle lanes with an expected width of 1.85 m (status: feasibility study from 2020) and footpaths of at least standard width are to be provided. Stationary traffic and delivery zones could be categorised in sections.
According to initial estimates, this expansion of the tram network could cost up to 110 million euros.
