"Chemnitz to go": discover the city with the smartphone app

Another measure in the "The city is me" communication campaign - Now available free of charge for iOS and Android phones in the Appstore and on Google Play

Just in time for the winter holidays, the city of Chemnitz and the Zebra advertising agency today presented the "Chemnitz to go" app, which was developed as part of the "The city is me" communication campaign. It is aimed at Chemnitz residents, tourists and visitors to the city alike and invites them to discover the city in sound and vision.

It is now available free of charge from the iTunes App Store and Google Play and works on all iOS and Android devices. On audio tours through the city, you can listen to informative, interesting and entertaining anecdotes about the sights along the routes either directly on site or from the comfort of your own home.

There is a short GPS-supported city centre tour with a total of 16 stops, which can be completed on foot, and the long Chemnitz tour, which leads to the outskirts of the city, including the Klaffenbach moated castle and the university campus, and is best completed by bike or car.

The Gunzenhauser Museum, the Petrified Forest, Chemnitz University of Technology, the castle church, the municipal swimming pool or Chemnitz Town Hall - these are just some of the points on the city centre tour, which are presented with great attention to detail in illustrated audio features. The majority of the points also contain audio contributions in which numerous contemporary witnesses and Chemnitz originals have their say, including, among others, tower keeper Stefan Weber, architect Peter Koch, Sören Gruner (band office), Gabriele Viertel (city archive), Gunzenhauser curator Anja Richter, Ralph Kretschmar (excavation manager), Lilli Türpe (contemporary witness of the 5th of March 45) and Prof. Clauss. March 45) and Prof Clauss Dietel.

The contributions are in German, English and Saxon. Actor Ben Münchow and Ines Deinert from Chemnitz were recruited as narrators, while the version in Saxon dialect was recorded by Chemnitz cabaret artist Stephan Dettmeyer.

The app also offers numerous leisure tips with information on places in the areas of "Art & Culture", "Gardens & Parks" and "Sport and Leisure". Here you can find opening times and how to reach individual sights and notable places.

Katja Uhlemann, City of Chemnitz: "Another declared aim of the "Die Stadt bin ich" communication campaign is to show Chemnitz residents and their guests the interesting, endearing and certainly also surprising facets of the city. The app is a great companion for this. And if the weather doesn't suit: The radio play character makes it possible to embark on a journey of discovery at home."

Joerg G. Fieback from Zebra adds: "The audio guide app turns Chemnitz into a talking city, so to speak. It's a modern and entertaining way for guests, tourists and students to explore the city - actively or from their sofa. Chemnitz residents will also experience one or two surprises. Even we felt that way."

Uwe Fiedler, Director of the Schloßberg Museum, was involved in the research: "The app offers a great new perspective on the entire spectrum of the city's history."

Keyword "The city is me"

The people of Chemnitz are at the centre of the communication concept. They describe their attitude to life, profess the good sides of their city and thus become ambassadors for a strong Chemnitz worth living in. The campaign advertises with the inviting motto "The city is me". In 2014, the focus was initially on the people in the city in order to jointly develop what is important for the city's identity. This year, the aim is to get people talking about Chemnitz outside the city. The online dialogue platform www.die-stadt-bin-ich.de is at the heart of the campaign.
