Chemnitz supports projects to promote democracy
Close consultation between the city administration and project organisers for the implementation of projects during the coronavirus pandemic
In 2020, the City of Chemnitz is providing municipal funds totalling 80,000 euros for project funding in the field of democracy promotion. As part of the federal "Demokratie Leben" programme, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens and Family is supporting project funding with 35,000 euros. What is new is that the Free State of Saxony, Saxon State Ministry of the Interior/State Prevention Council, has increased this fund by a total of 50,000 euros. This meant that considerably more funds were available than planned. Accordingly, more projects could be funded.
The funds have been fully allocated to projects and utilised. The fact that so many initiatives are committed to fair coexistence in light of the coronavirus pandemic is a positive signal for democracy.
The city administration is supporting the project organisers in adapting their projects to the current conditions and challenges. Individual projects are adapted to the current circumstances and regulations in consultation.
We are already seeing a switch to digital formats, e.g. for readings or the exchange of expertise. It is pleasing that these adaptations are expressly supported by the federal programme "Demokratie Leben" (Living Democracy) and that funding can be used for this purpose.
An overview of the projects can be found in the attachment.
