Chemnitz schools take part in Social Day

Every year in the last week of school before the summer holidays, Chemnitz schools take part in Social Day. Social Day is a day of practical work for the common good, for which the pupils receive a wage and donate it to social projects.
Representatives of the media can register their interest next Thursday, 9 July 2015,
10 a.m., at the Dammweg/Chemnitz Valley cycle path, where they can get an idea of the campaign. Staff from the Environment Agency will be happy to provide further information.
For years, the Goethe-Gymnasium and the Evangelical School Centre have been supporting the Chemnitz Environment Agency on this day in the removal of invasive neophytes in protected areas and on compensation areas. Invasive neophytes are plants that have migrated or been introduced to another continent after the Middle Ages, which do not blend in with the local vegetation but have superior propagation and spreading strategies and thus form pure populations due to the lack of natural enemies and also lead to economic damage.
The best known in our region are the giant hogweed from the Caucasus, the Japanese knotweed species and the glandular balsam. This year, for example, the Pfarrhübel and the spring pond in Ebersdorf will once again be cleared of balsam, while in Furth an der Chemnitz and in the "Am nördlichen Zeisigwald" nature reserve, knotweed will be cut out and lupins will be cut out in Talspeerengrund Euba.
