Chemnitz receives special prize at the European Week of Sport
"We award the title of Germany's most active city to the city of Chemnitz, as it has managed to activate many different institutions, clubs, kindergartens, schools and neighbourhoods and thus get its citizens moving," states the German Gymnastics Federation (Deutscher Turner-Bund e.V.), which is acting as the national coordinator of the European Week of Sport in cooperation with the EU Commission and the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
This means that the city has won an award for its first participation. "We are very proud of this," says EU Coordinator Pia Sachs.
A total of 20 organisations took part in the European Week of Sport in Chemnitz. A total of almost 1000 people took part in the events. The most popular was the sports badge day organised by the city sports association with 650 participants.
Next year's European Week of Sport will take place from 23 to 30 September 2017.
European Week of Sport 2016
With the "Families on the Move" campaign organised by the Sonnenberg district management, the city of Chemnitz took part in the European Week of Sport for the first time from
10 to 17 September 2016.
The campaign aimed to promote the joy of exercise and, above all, to offer families an opportunity to spend time together, have fun, meet other families and socialise. Existing sports and exercise programmes in the surrounding area were brought into focus and became more widely known in order to strengthen the health of young and old.
Over the course of the week, participants were able to take part in various sport and exercise activities, including taster sessions, and collect bonus points.
The "European Week of Sport" was launched in 2015 with the aim of encouraging all Europeans to be more active, to lead a more active lifestyle and to build a healthier society. Educational institutions, employers, cities and local authorities as well as gymnastics and sports clubs are particularly called upon to support this common goal.
