Chemnitz Museum Night on 20 May 2017 from 6 pm to 1 am

More than 80 partners are involved in the 18th edition of the Chemnitz Museum Night on 20 May 2017, more than ever before for the Museum Nights in Chemnitz. On this year's nocturnal tour through Chemnitz's museums, galleries and cultural institutions, where visitors can put together their own individual programme from 29 main locations with a total of 43 points of contact, there are familiar things to discover in new ways and previously little-known things to rediscover.

This year, the southern Sonnenberg is at the centre of the "Special Offer". At twelve different locations between Augustusburger Straße and Fürstenstraße, visitors can experience the diversity of the cultural and creative programme developed by Sonnenberg stakeholders in recent years and learn interesting facts about the history of the district. Among them are: The LOKOMOV, the Nikola Tesla, the Komplex theatre stage, the KaffeeSatz cultural pub, the Zietenaugust community garden and many more.

At the TIETZ, the programme picks up on the theme of this year's International Museum Day "Searching for Traces. Courage to take responsibility!", which will be celebrated for the 40th time on 21 May. Visitors to the Museum of Natural History can search for and find traces of many different kinds in the special exhibition "via regia - Road of Species", in the Neue Sächsische Galerie (New Saxon Gallery), in the offers on the ground floor, in the museum's storerooms and in the outdoor area of the Window into Earth History on Glockenstraße.

The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz will be showing prints from the Hartmut Koch Collection to mark the 90th birthday of Wolfgang Mattheuer and "Culture Cuts" by South Korean artist Cody Choi in special exhibitions on Theaterplatz.

Works by the German expressionist Fritz Ascher and young Saxon art by Wilhelm Frederking can be seen in the Gunzenhauser Museum. Throughout the evening, visitors can learn interesting details about the artworks of Otto Dix & Co. during discussions of individual works from the permanent exhibition.

The presentation of an exhibition on the Reformation and confessionalisation as reflected in the church furnishings in the Schloßbergmuseum will be accompanied by guided tours of the former monastery and the Schloßkirche.

The Museum of Saxon Vehicles, the Chemnitz Industrial Museum and the Chemnitz Tram Museum are jointly organising a themed tour entitled "Technology & Fashion". In the special ambience of the museum halls, visitors can experience practical sports and service clothing or customised everyday clothing and creative fashion designs from different eras. There are also plenty of cultural and hands-on activities to match the theme.

The association Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e. V. is once again opening the gates of the former prison on the Kaßberg for Museum Night. A recently inaugurated memorial site on the prison wall commemorates the moving history behind the walls with exhibition boards and memorial stones.

Treasures of Vietnamese archaeology are presented in a special exhibition at the smac. Many of the approximately 400 unique archaeological and historical objects are being shown outside Vietnam for the first time. These include magnificent jade sceptres, precious mythical creatures made of terracotta and huge bronze drums. The accompanying exhibition programme, which is being prepared for the Museum Night in cooperation with the Vietnamese Association, will convey fascinating impressions of the tradition and culture of the Southeast Asian country through music, theatre and dance.

The programme at the German Games Museum in Chemnitz is dedicated to the anniversary of the Reformation, with games and a medieval fair dedicated to Luther's time.

At Klaffenbach moated castle, the diversity of artistic play spaces in ceramics also takes centre stage musically.

If you want to plan your night-time discovery tour in the Ebersdorf district, you should visit

start at the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf railway park. Not only can you marvel at large steam, diesel and electric locomotives there, you can even take a ride in the driver's cab of a locomotive or the engine house express between signal boxes 3 and 2. On guided tours through the extensive area of the railway park, visitors can learn exciting facts about the facilities of the technical museum, the ropeway system or the variety of railway signals.

You can take a short journey back in time to the toy world of yesteryear in the Ebersdorf museum store.

In the historic classroom of the Ebersdorf School Museum, visitors can discover the wonderland of physics with amazing experiments. A "real" descendant of Adam Ries explains what the arithmetic artist taught us.

Chemnitz University of Technology is taking part in this year's Museum Night with the "Long Night of Science". At the locations on Reichenhainer Straße and Straße der Nationen, visitors can experience exciting experiments in laboratories or lecture theatres, learn about the latest research in Chemnitz during numerous lectures and presentations or see exhibits from areas of the university that are otherwise rarely open to the public.

In the special programme, the Laterne art association will be showing woodcuts by Lichtblau in its gallery in Karl-Liebknecht-Straße and the exhibition "LX annorum Andreas Schüller" in the outdoor area of the Schönherrfabrik. Works by Ilona Langer & Elke Keller + Jörg Seifert & Lothar Rericha can be seen in the "2 + 2" exhibition series in the project room of the Chemnitz Artists' Association.

The EVABU presents a window display with children's art and the artEck gallery presents the exhibition "DialogART".

The exhibition "Silber +Gold" with works by Uwe Schaarschmidt will open in the Galerie im Weltecho and the exhibition "Rolf Lieberknecht - MB - Mobile Balance" will open in the Marianne Brandt Haus in the presence of the artists. Galerie Oben is showing sculptures and wall works by Klaus Hack.

The Red Tower is open for viewing with the exhibition "Große Chemnitzer" ("Great Chemnitzers") on the 24 "denk-mal!" panels on the footpath in front of Chemnitz's oldest building. This year's programme of the Stasi Records Office, Chemnitz branch, focuses on the Stasi in Saxony.

The Chemnitz Museum Night has existed since 2000 as a joint project organised by the City of Chemnitz's culture department with the participation of municipal, association-owned and private museums, galleries and institutions.

Special service for people with disabilities:

The programme brochure provides visitors with information on disabled access to the participating museums and facilities for visitors with mobility impairments as well as information on offers for people with sensory impairments. In the German Games Museum Chemnitz and the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf Railway Park, there will be joint guided tours for hearing and hearing-impaired visitors.

Most of the locations can be easily reached with four extra CVAG tours. The admission ticket is also valid as a travel ticket.

Ticket service:

The Museum Night ticket is available for adults at a price of 8 euros and the youth ticket for 3 euros (also valid for concessions). Advance sales started on 2 May 2017. Tickets are also available at the box offices of the museums and institutions. Admission is free for children up to the age of 14.
