Chemnitz Museum Night celebrates its 25th anniversary

The programme for Chemnitz Museum Night on 4 May entitled "Let's celebrate!" was presented today at the Kaßberg Prison learning and memorial site - one of the main venues for this year's edition. Advance ticket sales for the anniversary edition of Chemnitz Museum Night also start today.

On 4 May, night owls and anyone interested in art and culture are once again invited to the Museum Night in Chemnitz and the cultural region. This year's Museum Night will open at 5.30 pm on the forecourt of the TIETZ.

This year, 37 museums, collections and institutions as well as twelve galleries are taking part and once again inviting visitors on a journey through the city and surrounding area. Guests can expect a varied programme of more than 300 events, exciting encounters and numerous anniversaries.

For the first time, the Museum Night in the cultural region surrounding Chemnitz will begin during the day. The adventure museum ZeitWerkStadt Frankenberg, the Esche Museum Limbach-Oberfrohna, the Gellert Museum Hainichen, the historical show weaving mill Braunsdorf and the Textile and Racing Museum Hohenstein-Ernstthal are taking part in the anniversary edition. Visitors are invited to learn more about the industrial history of Central Saxony, which is characterised by the textile industry and automobile production. Along the C15 city railway line, the three museums in Braunsdorf, Frankenberg and Hainichen will take guests on a "texTour" of text, textures and textiles.

In Chemnitz, the Museum Night from the evening until late at night is all about the
25th anniversary with numerous highlights. For the first time since its opening as a museum facility in October 2023, the Kaßberg Prison learning and memorial site will strengthen the main Museum Night programme.

Over the past two decades, Chemnitz Museum Night has surprised visitors time and again with its diverse range of events and has also put the spotlight on institutions, anniversaries, neighbourhoods and themed areas. With the Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium Chemnitz, the Schulplanetarium Chemnitz, the Städtische Theatern Chemnitz and the Weltecho, institutions from past editions are represented.

Under the title "Let's celebrate!", other anniversaries will also be celebrated, such as 10 years of smac - Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology, 20 years of the TIETZ cultural department stores', 35 years of the "Peaceful Revolution", 111 years of Tietz and 700 years of the village of Ebersdorf.

The special programme for this year's Museum Night will also mark the 50th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone for one of Germany's largest housing estates. For the first time, the Museum Night will be held in the "Fritz Heckert" residential area to mark the occasion. A thematic arc will be drawn beyond the boundaries of the residential area and, in cooperation with the Saxon State Archive - Chemnitz State Archive, the most important aspects of urban and industrial development from the second half of the 20th century to the present day will be highlighted. The ceremonial opening of the special programme will take place on 4 May at 4 pm in the Vita-Center Chemnitz.

There will also be new things to discover, such as the Hartmann Factory, which will serve as a visitor and information centre for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Guests will gain an insight into the planned future use of the building and the status of preparations for the European Capital of Culture year.

On the forecourt of the TIETZ, a mixture of local, regional and international artists can be experienced free of charge: The Chemnitz band Foreghost, whose electronic indie folk music is now known beyond the city limits for its captivating live performances, will kick things off. The ensemble Atonor from Leipzig will then produce a firework display of unusual sounds. With self-built sound objects by the artist Erwin Stache, a musical experiment of a special kind is then created. The wall of the Basarke extension also becomes a stage when the Leipzig artist CFM performs her audiovisual concert. She is currently collecting the sounds and visual impressions on an artistic research trip to South Africa and is composing a new piece from them for the Chemnitz Museum Night, which will only be performed once on 4 May. As the finale of the evening, internationally renowned artist Gudrun Gut will get visitors dancing with electronic beats and visual impressions.

The youngest guests can go on an exciting journey through time and discovery through the cosmos of Central Saxony's museum treasures with various hands-on activities. A children's game exchange, painting and craft activities, discovery tours and family tours invite you to explore and be creative - and make the museum night a special experience for the whole family.

For the first time, some programme offers for Museum Night 2024 can be booked in advance at www.mitdenken.sachsen.de/1038351. Booking is possible until 3 May, 6 pm and is free of charge. To take advantage of the programme offers on the day of the event, a ticket for the Museum Night 2024 is required.

Opening event for Museum Night 2024:

On 4 May, 5.30 pm, this year's Museum Night will open on the forecourt in front of the TIETZ. After the official opening, up-and-coming dancers from the "Room - Hip Hop Spot" will get the audience in the mood and hand over to the break dancers from the Soul Expression team, who will show a sample of their programme, which can also be seen as part of the Tanz | Moderne | Tanz festival. Afterwards, various ensembles from the Chemnitz Municipal Music School will traditionally open the international and local music programme for Museum Night 2024 with a concert in the atrium of the TIETZ on the forecourt and on the ground floor.

Aftershow party

On 4 May, from 11 pm, guests can round off their visit at the Museum Night after-show party in the Weltecho Club. Holders of a ticket for the Museum Night 2024 in Chemnitz and the cultural region receive free admission.

Offers for people with sensory impairments and multilingual offers are also highlighted.

Mobility for the Museum Night - travelling between Chemnitz and the region:

With the transport companies of the Central Saxony Transport Association (VMS), the Museum Night 2024 in Chemnitz and the cultural region can be explored conveniently by public transport.

The Museum Night tickets entitle the holder to visit the participating institutions on 4 May according to the opening times listed in the programme. They are also valid on 4 May, from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. the following day, as a ticket on all public transport in the entire VMS network area (with the exception of the Augustusburg and Fichtelberg cable cars) and on the Museum Night shuttle express tours.

The "Chemnitz Model", express buses and regional trains can be used to reach the facilities in the cultural region (Braunsdorf, Frankenberg, Hainichen, Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Limbach-Oberfrohna) and guests can travel between the medium-sized centres in the region and Chemnitz city centre.

Shuttle service for the Museum Night - on tour by bus:

Once again this year, a comprehensive mobility offer will give guests the opportunity to explore the various institutions in Chemnitz freely and flexibly with the extra shuttle service from 5 pm. As in previous years, the special lines will depart from in front of the Karl Marx Monument on Brückenstraße. The timetable with the routes will be published separately and will be handed out to guests when tickets are sold.

Ticket service:

The Museum Night ticket is available at a price of 12 euros, reduced 6 euros, or as a family ticket for 24 euros and is also valid as a travel ticket. Admission is free for children up to school age.

Tickets can be purchased immediately at the museums in the main programme during opening hours and on the day of the event at the box offices, at MARKT1 - Ticket Service of Chemnitz Municipal Theatre, at the City Ticket Chemnitz branch, at the Vita-Center Chemnitz and at the TIETZ. At the Henry van de Velde Museum/Villa Esche, Parkstraße 58, and Burg Rabenstein, Oberfrohnaer Straße 16c, tickets can only be purchased at the box office.
