Chemnitz model: start of construction work on road and pavement renewal

Reitbahnstraße/ Bernsdorfer Straße between Annenstraße and Turnstraße, 2nd section (landward carriageway) as well as basic expansion of Südbahnstraße

Today, work began on the structural expansion of the landward carriageway on Reitbahnstraße / Bernsdorfer Straße between Annenstraße and Turnstraße with connection to the Chemnitz model.

Similar to the city-side sections of Reitbahnstraße and Bernsdorfer Straße, which were completed in 2016, the public traffic area on the country-side of the carriageway is now also being upgraded in terms of traffic and urban development. The carriageway and pavement on the approx. 750 m long road section will be fundamentally upgraded.

The Annenstraße and Bernsbachplatz bus stops will also be converted to make them barrier-free when the pavement is extended. In addition, planting areas for English oaks will be created on the pavements in order to achieve an avenue character on Reitbahnstraße in the future.

The landward carriageway will then be passable at a width of 4.75 m throughout. In the area of the development, angled or longitudinal parking spaces will be provided in future and a cycle lane will be marked out from Bernbachplatz.

In addition to the planned road construction work, a new mixed water collector (DN 800) will be laid starting at Moritzstraße on behalf of the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz. For the planned laying of the sewer, it is necessary to remove and reinstall sections of the CVAG railway tracks in the Annenstraße / Reitbahnstraße area.

Furthermore, on behalf of eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co KG, the existing drinking water pipeline will be renewed and the gas pipeline renovated. In addition, the already installed combined overhead line/lighting masts will be connected with a new cable system.

The work on Reitbahnstraße will generally be carried out during the 2017 calendar year with full road closures in the landward direction of travel. During this period, Moritzstraße (Annenstraße) / Zschopauer Straße / Ritterstraße will be used as a diversion route in the landward direction. From the 2018 calendar year, Bernsdorfer Straße will then be extended between Bernsbachplatz and the CM2 junction (above best Car Wash). In the course of this, the basic expansion of Südbahnstraße between Bernsdorfer Straße and Reichenhainer Straße will also be realised. In addition to the planned road construction work, the utilities such as sewerage, electricity, drinking water and lighting must also be relocated or repaired. These measures are being coordinated and realised jointly by the Chemnitz Civil Engineering Office, eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co. KG and the ESC.

During the construction work, restrictions must be expected for local residents and pedestrians. However, the temporary car park on the corner of Reitbahnstraße and Clara-Zetkin Straße will be available for residents' parking until further notice.

Work will begin with the sewer construction on the corner of Reitbahnstraße and Moritzstraße. During this period (approx. 3 weeks), Moritzstraße can only be accessed via Annaberger Straße. In order to ensure access to the Sparkasse staff car park and the day nursery, the one-way system must be temporarily suspended. During this period, the short-term car parks in front of the Sparkasse cannot be used.

Completion of the entire project is planned for July 2018. The construction volume of this construction phase amounts to around 2.84 million euros. The road construction is being subsidised by the Free State of Saxony to the tune of 80 percent.

Wolff & Müller Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH & Co KG from Dresden was commissioned with the construction work.
