Chemnitz meadow care day - caring for flower and butterfly meadows together
Siegfried Scythe" campaign on 1 August, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Badwiese Ebersdorf
On Saturday, 1 August, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Environmental Agency invites you to take part in the "Siegfried Scythe" campaign at the Badwiese Ebersdorf nature reserve.
This day is all about meadow maintenance. Special attention will be paid to increasing biodiversity. Lean wet and fresh meadows are actually very species-rich. However, these meadows have become rare. Careful maintenance with a scythe helps to preserve the habitat for insects.
Participatory activities include raking hay together, handling the scythe and the traditional transport of hay on a horse-drawn cart. Scything will be demonstrated and can be practised. There will also be an ongoing exchange of experiences.
Nature walks
Two nature walks through the area are planned for 10 a.m. and 12 noon on this day, led by Jens Börner, Head of Department at the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. The guided tours will take place in the nature reserve "Am Nördlicher Zeisigwald" and will show examples of the positive effects of the "right" management of these habitats from a nature conservation perspective. The diversity of herbs and insects as well as the bird life of the open and semi-open landscape are used as indicators here.
Grass cuttings to take away
As a special feature, anyone interested can take mown material with them and enrich their own meadows with seed to enjoy more flowering power in the coming years.
If you would like to take mown material with you, please book in advance by calling 0371 488 3602 and stating the quantity you wish to take. (The collection of grass cuttings is only possible while stocks last)
A sufficient number of parking spaces are available directly at the Badwiese (railway museum car park).
