Chemnitz maintains contact with top positions in the German Solar League
Chemnitz is one of the cities in Germany with a comparatively high proportion of utilised solar energy. This is reflected in its 11th place in the German Solar League for cities with over 100,000 inhabitants. Chemnitz even took third place in the category "Production of solar heat". The Solarbundesliga is a municipal competition organised since 2001 by the specialist information service "Solarthemen" and the publishing house Bröer & Witt GbR in cooperation with Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V. (German Environmental Aid).
Around 2,400 independent local authorities and more than 900 villages and districts took part in the competition. The benchmark is the collector area per inhabitant for solar heat and the kilowatts installed per capita for solar electricity. The per capita data is analysed in the two sub-areas of solar heat and solar electricity. For solar power and solar heat, one point is awarded for each watt per inhabitant. In addition, bonus points are awarded for balanced development in the two sub-sectors.
As it is more difficult for larger cities to achieve high values per capita, the competition is organised in 5 size categories. Chemnitz belongs to the class of large cities with over 100,000 inhabitants, which includes over 50 other cities.
