Chemnitz launches extensive school investment programme - over 100 million euros in new school buildings by 2024
The city of Chemnitz is launching an extensive school construction programme. In addition to the measures already agreed, a further four primary schools and three secondary schools are to be built by 2024.
In total, the city plans to invest around 120 million euros in the new school locations. The massive new construction is necessary as the number of pupils in primary and secondary schools will increase significantly. This is the result of the new school network planning, which will be presented to the city council in November.
Under the leadership of Mayor Sven Schulze, a project group has spent the last few months analysing pupil numbers and deriving the need for new buildings. "While we had to close schools a few years ago, we are now building new ones again. This is a trend reversal and a good sign for the future of Chemnitz. It's worth spending money on," says Mayor Sven Schulze.
The plans include
- a new two-form entry primary school at Weststraße 19 with a two-court sports hall. The building of the former vocational school centre Wirtschaft II is to be used for this. The school is due to open in the 2022/2023 school year.
- Two new primary schools are to be built in the Sonnenberg/Ebersdorf/Hilbersdorf school district. One on "Südlicher Sonnenberg" in the Jakobstraße/Tschaikowskistraße area and another in the Planitzwiese area.
- The primary school on Planitzwiese is to be developed as a so-called campus solution combined with a secondary school with two classes. Subject to approval from the Ministry of Education, this would allow the "Good School" concept to be implemented.
- There are also plans to reopen the former Chemnitz School Model building on Charlottenstrasse as a school.
- In the secondary school sector, a new secondary school will be built along Zwickauer Strasse in addition to the two-form entry secondary school on Planitzwiese. The 3-form secondary school "Chemnitz-West" is scheduled for completion by mid-2023. A plot of land still needs to be acquired for this. The complex will also include a new two-court sports hall.
- The former Neubauer School on Vettersstraße is planned as another new secondary school site. A three-form secondary school with a sports hall is to be built here.
Until the school buildings are completed, the city will compensate for the lack of school capacity with various capacity-expanding measures and mobile classrooms. Measures that have already been implemented include the utilisation of the 4-form Baumgarten primary school, the extension of the Untere Luisen secondary school, the expansion of the Comenius primary school, the complete renovation of the Flemming primary school and the refurbishment of the former Philippstraße secondary school.
Building Mayor Michael Stötzer: "The high investment programme will demand a lot from us. However, school buildings will be our top priority over the next few years and will largely tie up our available personnel capacities and financial resources. We are happy to take on this task."
The school construction plans were presented to the school committee yesterday and will be incorporated into the new school network planning.
