Chemnitz kicks off the European Week of Local Democracy
In favour of living together in a multicultural society
The European Week of Local Democracy 2016 is an opportunity for the Lesecafé Odradek to continue its event series "Human Rights and Democracy in Europe". On Wednesday, 12 October at 7 p.m., Oliver M. Piecha will give a lecture entitled "Syria and the Middle East: War without end? From the 'Arab Spring' to the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of our time". A film screening on Thursday, 13 October at 9 pm will document the 20-year struggle against fascism in the Czech Republic. Both events are aimed at young people in Chemnitz in order to sensitise them to these issues. With appropriate culinary specialities, an open and appealing atmosphere will be created to stimulate an exchange on both an emotional and intercultural level.
The Initiative Europastudien e. V. of Chemnitz University of Technology is organising a conference on "Integration // Between Volunteering and Science" on Thursday, 13 October, from 10 am to 4 pm as part of the European Week of Local Democracy. Three different workshops will be rounded off by an opening lecture and a panel discussion on the question "How can integration succeed?".
During the Europe-wide action week from Monday 10 to Sunday 16 October, Chemnitz associations and institutions will be promoting the expansion of democratic participation at a local level. With this year's motto "Living together in multicultural societies: respect, dialogue, interaction", the Council of Europe wants to encourage citizens in its 47 member states to show mutual respect and observe human rights.
