Chemnitz is once again honoured as a "Fairtrade Town"

On Thursday, 22 September, from 3.30 pm, the city of Chemnitz will be awarded the title of "Fairtrade Town" for a further two years. Mayor Sven Schulze will receive the certificate renewing the title in the City Council Chamber of the Town Hall after a ceremonial address and a laudatory speech by Fairtrade Ambassador of Honour Manfred Holz. The City of Chemnitz Music School will provide the musical programme for the event.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to the award ceremony.
Two years ago, Chemnitz received its first award from the non-profit organisation Fairtrade Deutschland e. V. for its commitment to fair trade, for which it had to demonstrably fulfil five criteria: a steering group coordinates all activities, fair trade products are offered and served in shops and catering establishments, and fair trade products are also served at municipal events. Fair trade products such as coffee and tea are also offered at municipal events and catering occasions. Civil society also carries out educational work and the local media report on local activities. Chemnitz once again fulfils all five criteria of the Fairtrade Towns campaign.
The commitment in Fairtrade Towns is diverse: in Chemnitz, the fair Chemnitz coffee and chocolate, a fair brunch, a coffee bet, the longest coffee table and a Fairtrade festival in the Stadthallenpark are just a few examples of successful projects in recent years. The Fairtrade Town Chemnitz steering group is planning to engage in more dialogue with local companies on the subject of fair production and supply chains.
The Fairtrade Towns campaign also offers member cities concrete options for action to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted in 2015. Under the motto "think globally, act locally", the cities are making an important contribution with their commitment.
Chemnitz is one of more than 780 Fairtrade Towns in Germany. The global network comprises more than 2,000 Fairtrade Towns in a total of 36 countries, including the UK, Sweden, Brazil and Lebanon.
