Chemnitz is growing: City records population increase
2012 population statistics - 861 marriages - 2900 children born
More Chemnitz residents: An increase of 858 inhabitants - that is the result of the 2012 population statistics. 241,403 people lived in the city as their main place of residence at the end of last year. At the end of 2011, there were 240,545 residents.
The migration balance is a positive factor: significantly more people are coming to Chemnitz than are leaving. Last year, the increase in this area almost doubled to 1901 (2011: 1024). A total of 12,129 people moved to the city last year, while 10,228 left.
"That's really good news. The most important thing is the clearly visible trend," says a delighted Mayor Barbara Ludwig. "The city is attracting people because there are good jobs and an attractive university here." Part of the growth is due to the increased proportion of foreign students, for example.
The number of births in 2012 is 2016, the number of deaths is 3073 (Note for editors: There may still be changes here due to late registrations for the month of December. However, these do not affect the balance of residents with their main place of residence, as this is a cut-off date analysis).
Weddings
In 2012, 861 couples said "I do" at the Chemnitz registry office - more than in 2011, when 794 couples got married here. In addition, nine civil partnerships were established at the Chemnitz registry office in 2012, five of which were female and four male.
Most marriages also took place in Chemnitz town hall in 2012: A total of 461 couples said "I do" here last year. Last year, 171 couples got married at the Klaffenbach moated castle. Once again last year, members of different nationalities said "I do" in Chemnitz: Wedding couples from Vietnam, China and Thailand, from the Ukraine and Brazil, from Switzerland and Poland, the USA and Hungary were represented.
2,900 children were born in Chemnitz in 2012
Notarisation of births in 2012 at the Chemnitz registry office: 2,900 children were born in Chemnitz in 2012 and were notarised by the Chemnitz registry office according to their place of birth. This included 78 twin births and two triplet births. Once again, more boys were born in Chemnitz in 2012, totalling 1,477. 1,423 girls saw the light of day in Chemnitz last year.
Various nations were represented in the notarisation of births - from Ukraine, Vietnam, Poland, Iraq, Iran and Italy.

The most popular first names for boys in 2012 were: Paul (48), Luca (44), Tim (30), Ben (29), Emil (26), Alexander (25), Max (24), Elias (21), Louis (20), Maximilian (20) and Oskar (19).
