On Wednesday, 4 June, from 2 pm to 6 pm, all Chemnitz residents are invited to take part in activities at the Red Tower on the occasion of the nationwide Heat Action Day. The aim is to draw attention to the issue of heat protection. The day of action is being organised by the City of Chemnitz Environmental Agency in cooperation with the Health for Future Dresden initiative, the Saxon State Medical Association, Chemnitz-Rabenstein DRK Hospital, Chemnitz Clinic, the Doctors for Saxony network and the German Alliance for Climate Change and Health.
Representatives of the media are also invited.
In addition to short presentations and a climate consultation hour, a so-called heat skills lab will be offered, in which participants will receive practical tips for dealing with heat. Other interactive activities round off the programme.
In addition, a Chemnitz puzzle booklet developed by the Environmental Agency in close cooperation with the Office for Health and Prevention will be offered free of charge on site. This Chemnitz-specific interactive puzzle booklet is specially designed for children, as they are one of the groups particularly vulnerable to heat. The puzzle booklet is designed to playfully teach children how to behave correctly in hot temperatures and will be sent to all daycare centres in the Chemnitz city area.
The booklet will also be available free of charge from 4 June 2025 at www.chemnitz.de/hitze. In this way, the city of Chemnitz is further expanding its range of prevention and protection against heat and responding to the increasingly hot summer months.
Cool places and drinking fountains in the city
Especially in midsummer, it is important not to spend too much time in the sun and to stay hydrated. The city of Chemnitz as well as private initiatives and companies provide various solutions for this, such as eight drinking fountains and 37 refill stations where citizens can fill up their drinking bottles free of charge.
Cooler and shadier places that invite you to linger even in high temperatures can be found mainly in greener parts of the city, such as the Küchwald forest. An overview of all drinking fountains, refill stations and green spaces can be found on the cool city map at www.chemnitz.de/coolerstadtplan.
