Chemnitz is a climate pioneer
Mayor Miko Runkel accepts climate award
Chemnitz received the European Climate Award (eca) on 6 November. The award honours the city for its successful participation in the three-year pilot project "eea-plus - adaptation to climate change", which examined the extent to which municipalities are prepared for the consequences of climate change and which measures need to be implemented in the near future.
Of the twelve participating pilot municipalities from Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, Chemnitz achieved the best result with 51.4 % of the criteria. Mayor Miko Runkel and the climate team, consisting of representatives from various specialist departments and companies, accepted the award from the Saxon State Minister for the Environment and Agriculture, Thomas Schmidt, at the Hygiene Museum in Dresden yesterday.
The city's climate protection activities have been put through their paces as part of the European Energy Awards (eea) since 2009. Chemnitz received the gold award for this in 2015. The European Climate Award now goes beyond this and motivates local authorities to adapt to climate change in good time and in line with local conditions. The three-year pilot project showed that Chemnitz is on the right track. In addition to the flood protection concept, exemplary projects include the cooling network currently under construction at Chemnitz Klinikum gGmbH and the climate- and nature-friendly forest reorganisation in the city's forests.
