Chemnitz ice skating pair wins World Championship silver medal
At the Ice Skating World Championships in London, Canada, the Chemnitz ice skating pair Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy missed out on their fifth World Championship title after 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. After coming third in the compulsory skating, they moved up to second place with their Bolero free skate and a sensational triple axel throw, but had to admit defeat to the outstanding European champions Tatyana Volososhar and Maxim Trankov from Russia after a free skate with ups and downs.
Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "I would like to congratulate them on winning the World Championship runner-up title and I am sure that further successes will follow. Now it's time to keep our fingers crossed for next year's Olympics."
The two ice skating stars will be welcomed in Chemnitz on Tuesday, 19 March. The reception is planned for 16:00 in the Galerie Roter Turm on the cinema level. All Chemnitz residents, guests of the city and friends of ice skating are cordially invited from 15:30.
The Chemnitz ice skating pair is trained by former figure skating world champion Ingo Steuer. In their career, Savchenko and Szolkowy have won four European Championship titles, four World Championship titles and a bronze medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
