The Chemnitz figure skating pair Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy will receive the City of Chemnitz Award of Honour tomorrow. The city of Chemnitz's second highest honour will be presented to the two exceptional athletes during their show "Imagine on Ice" in the Chemnitz Arena. Siegmund Rotstein, Jutta Müller and Prof. Carl Hahn, three honorary citizens of the city of Chemnitz, will also be guests at the event. The laudatory speech will be held by Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
"Aljona and Robin have set standards in international pairs skating for over ten years, continuing the history of figure skating in the city of Chemnitz in an outstanding way. They have impressively represented their sport, their country and their city. In a unique way, they have combined top sporting performance and artistic standards, touching and inspiring millions of people worldwide. The City of Chemnitz would like to say 'thank you' with this award of honour," said Barbara Ludwig.
The honour includes the prize of honour in the form of the small sculpture "Snow" designed by Chemnitz artist Carsten Nicolai, an award certificate and prize money of 1,500 euros. Savchenko and Szolkowy also signed the city's Golden Book.
The City of Chemnitz's prize of honour has been awarded four times so far, to figure skating coach Jutta Müller (1998), Olympic discus champion Lars Riedel (2001), Olympic track cycling champion Jens Fiedler (2005) and the city's doorman Stefan Weber (2012).
