Memorial plaque for the deported victims of the Theresienstadt ghetto is installed
On Friday, 7 September, a delegation from Chemnitz will travel to Theresienstadt to inaugurate the memorial plaque for the victims of the Theresienstadt ghetto who were deported from Chemnitz. Mayor Miko Runkel will unveil the plaque on behalf of Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. Miko Runkel will be accompanied by the honorary citizen of the city of Chemnitz, Siegmund Rotstein, and the chairwoman of the Jewish Community of Chemnitz, Dr Ruth Röcher.
Young members of the Jewish community, members of the cultural committee and around 30 student representatives from Chemnitz secondary schools and grammar schools will also be present.
The unveiling will be followed by a tour of the memorial site.
The memorial plaque of the City of Chemnitz will be placed in the columbarium of the Terezín Memorial. Its text in four languages (German, English, Czech, Hebrew) will commemorate the citizens of Chemnitz of Jewish origin who were deported from Chemnitz to Theresienstadt and on to the Auschwitz and Treblinka extermination camps between 1942 and 1945.
