Chemnitz cultural summer brings neighbourhood character to the Brühl: Seven weeks of extra events with street art, guerrilla knitting, workshops, guided tours, music and literature
Cultural programme from 19 July to 8 September on the Brühlboulevard - Brühl management of the city supports the committed project Information on the programme and participants is also available online at www.kultursommer.cc
Kissing the Brühl awake and turning the traditional boulevard into a special attraction in Chemnitz with artists from various fields over a period of almost two months - this is how the Brühl manager of the city of Chemnitz formulates the declared aim of the organisers of the Chemnitz Summer of Culture 2013 on the Brühl. Dr Urs Luczak: "We are looking forward to many and varied new art encounters here on the Brühl and cordially invite Chemnitz residents and guests to enjoy and participate in these seven weeks of compact art on the Brühl. With the Cultural Summer, the European Art Community and its partners offer a temporal and organisational framework for a variety of events and projects for all ages. The project is supported by the city's Brühl Management, our Brühl Office and the federal and state programme SOP - Active Urban and District Centres." Over a period of seven weeks, Luczak continues, Brühl will be lively and urban and young living culture will be combined with long-established forms. Painting, music and numerous projects and workshops on the boulevard will make July and August a summer of culture. The pedestals typical of Brühl's architecture will be transformed into stages and the boulevard itself will become a permanent stage for activities.
Redesigning the face of the former shopping street
With the creativity of over 50 urban artists from all over Germany and the USA, who have responded to the call to help shape the Chemnitz Summer of Culture on the Brühl, the face of the former shopping street will be redesigned: With the artistic design of the terrace platforms on the Brühl, one or two fire walls, individual shop windows, the ground floor zones of vacant buildings and the installation of mobile graffiti walls, the Brühl will become a large street art gallery. Events such as the Rebelism Mission IV, Wall of Femme or Streetcycle Invasion invite you to join in and get involved, while readings, exhibitions, workshops, guided tours and lectures invite you to linger, gather information or discuss. Open-air events and small concerts by local bands will enliven the terraces and open spaces on the Brühl. Spontaneous and uncomplicated, both street musicians and jazz bands will be offered a forum here.
Headquarters in the "Brühl Barlament" Brühl 51
During the event period, the headquarters will be set up in Brühl 51, the "Brühl Barlament". A central contact point will be created here. Among other things, the lectures, workshops and exhibitions will be centred around this building.
The complete programme for the 2013 Chemnitz Summer of Culture at Brühl is available online at www.kultursommer.cc

Inspiration for more - here is an excerpt from the programme:
Spektrum Brühl
There's something to feast your eyes on here. The "Spektrum Brühl" revitalisation initiative gets off to a colourful start. More than 50 artists will envelop the forgotten boulevard in the colourful facets of light for the entire seven-week event period.
Workshops, various dates
Art is a wonderful thing, especially when you create it yourself. That's why the Kultursommer offers a wide range of workshops. Graffiti for beginners, advanced and senior citizens; street art with stencils and spray paint; Wall of Femme; screen printing for beginners, graphic artists or experimentalists; creative ceramics.
Streetcycle Invasion, Saturday, 27 July to Sunday, 28 July
The guys from Cycle-Invasion want to showcase Realstreet BMX authentically in the form of a BMX contest. The prize money of 1400 euros makes it clear that this is not just for fun.
Sunday Hangover, every Sunday
Chill out with live music in a relaxed lounge atmosphere every Sunday. Whether with a picnic basket, slacklines or in a deckchair - everyone is invited to enjoy the breath of fresh air on the Brühl and show that the boulevard is alive.
Guerrilla knitting, every Monday, 3 to 5 pm
Let's fight the dreariness and decay. Together with Kraftwerk, all the benches, trees and lanterns on Brühl Boulevard are knitted in needle-like assaults.
Readings, various dates
Chemnitz authors are given a platform on the Brühl. After the readings, there is always the opportunity to talk to the authors, get autographs or buy a book.
Radio ballet by Radio T, Saturday, 7 September, 5 pm
Combination of music, text and movement. An exciting story is told that repeatedly asks the listeners to perform movements that fit the plot. However, the listeners are not sitting in their cars or at home, but are standing within sight of the visitors to the Kultursommer on the Brühl.
Rebelism Mission IV - Graffiti & Freestyle Battle, Saturday, 17 August.
Back to the roots of hip hop. The street art and freestyle contest "Rebelism Mission" takes up residence on the Brühl. There will be plenty of rapping and spraying and the breakers from Kraftwerk e. V. will show off their skills to the beats of El Cane. The music will be provided by John Readen, MC Speche and DJ Ron.
The art form of graffiti, Saturday, 10 August and Saturday, 24 August
René Kästner (CSF Media) explains in his lecture how graffiti began and how it conquered Europe and then the contemporary art market - with plenty of visual material, of course.
Riddle tours, Saturday, 27 July, 10 August, 24 August, 7 September, each at 2 p.m.
On this tour, the organisers trace the historical development of the Brühl. A quiz with small prizes awaits at the end.
