Chemnitz continues to grow in 2018

The population statistics for 2018 show 299 more residents in Chemnitz than in the previous year. As at 31 December 2018, 247,721 people had their main residence in the city. If you also include people with a secondary residence, Chemnitz had 251,142 inhabitants on the reporting date.

Of the residents with their main residence, 226,932 had German citizenship (2017: 228,701) and 20,789 were foreigners (2017: 18,721). This includes, for example, students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz companies, citizens who have lived in the city for many years and refugees.


In total, 13,422 people moved to the city last year (2017: 12,633) and 12,001 people left (2017: 11,095).


The number of new births in Chemnitz was 2,250 (as at 31 December 2018). However, the number of births in 2018 is still provisional, as many births are only reported in the course of the following month. In comparison, 2,376 births were recorded on 31 December 2017. A total of 2,456 births were finally registered for 2017.


The same applies to the number of deaths. This figure was 3,337 as at 31 December 2018. In 2017, 3,356 deaths were provisionally registered on 31 December 2017. The final figure was then 3,462 deaths.
