Chance Inclusion - exhibition, reading, workshop, counselling

03.05. until 31.05.2017
"Reading with other senses"

A hands-on exhibition presents the special media offerings of the German Central Library for the Blind (DZB). The exhibition gives an impression of how varied and creative access to literature and information can be for blind and visually impaired people. The DZB produces and lends out media of a special kind: from the tactile picture book "Der Grüffelo" to tactile maps, music in braille and accessible audio books. The exhibits can be "felt" and tried out on site.

As a partner library, the city library works closely with the DZB and is happy to advise those affected and interested as part of the "Chance Inklusion" initiative.

Exhibition opening with lecture and reading

Lecture: Werner Nitschke, "The German Central Library for the Blind"

In the introductory lecture, Werner Nitschke, Deputy Director of the DZB, explains the tasks and services of the DZB. More than one million blind and visually impaired people in Germany cannot simply buy their books in the shops. The DZB offers them a wide range of literature to borrow and buy. It is not only a special library, but also a production centre for Braille books, audio books, reliefs and sheet music. And has been since 1894.

Reading: Henry Wanyoike, "My long walk into the light"

Members of the Saxony Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired read the story of blind world-class runner Henry Wanyoike from Kenya in Braille.

Henry Wanyoike went blind at the age of 19. Five years later, he won the 5000 metre race at the Paralympics in Sydney in spectacular fashion. He is regarded as a legend and a voice for people with disabilities in Africa. His actions have made him a symbol of hope and a role model for countless people.

Writers in dialogue: Volker Braun, "Reference Library of the Unhoused"

What is poetry talking about at the beginning of the 21st century? Still, or only now, about the wilderness of society. At kilometre zero of indignation, on the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Volker Braun saw the reference library that gives his new book its title. In it, the poems are arranged like improvised shelves, individual small writings, easy to pick out and use. There is talk of wandering creatures and fabulous labourers, the naked and the hooded, the unsaturated crowd, unhoused humanity. The poet sees himself on the warm earth, seeking a refuge for the senses and drawing pleasure, not hope, from the raw material. "Poems are the core of the work, the incidental actuality."

To complement the reading from his new book, Volker Braun will be answering questions and engaging in dialogue about what he has read and about memorable aspects of his rich poetic biography. The discussion partner will be literary scholar Prof Dr Bernd Leistner.

An event organised by VillaEsche/GGG in cooperation with the Chemnitz City Library Supporters' Association
