Chemnitz City Archive elected to the Association of German Archivists
The Chemnitz City Archive is a member of the newly elected federal and Saxon state boards of the Association of German Archivists (VdA).
The VdA is a registered association of archivists in the Federal Republic of Germany. The VdA was founded in 1946. As a professional association, it represents the interests of the German archives sector and is committed to ensuring that its members can provide their important services to society. The promotion of professional exchange and further training in the archives sector is a particular concern of the VdA. To this end, it organises the annual German Archives Day with the ARCHIVISTICA trade fair and issues publications. It initiates and supports the Day of Archives, on which German archives present themselves to the public with a varied programme.
The VdA brings together archivists from all disciplines. With currently around 2,400 members, it is the largest archives association in Europe. It is organised into eight specialist groups according to the various archive disciplines (see below). Regionally, it is organised into state associations, which also hold their own conferences. In Saxony, for example, the regional association organises the Saxon Archives Day every two years.
The VdA is a member of the International Council on Archives (ICA) and has adopted the International Council on Archives' Code of Ethics for Archivists. It participates in the Section of Professional Associations (SPA) in the ICA.
The VdA is organised into eight specialist groups (FG):
FG 1: State Archives, FG 2: Municipal Archives, FG 3: Church Archives, FG 4: Reign and Family Archives, FG 5: Economic Archives, FG 6: Archives of Parliaments, Political Parties, Foundations and Associations, FG 7: Media Archives, FG 8: Archives of Universities and Scientific Institutions
Dr Paolo Cecconi, the director of the Chemnitz City Archives, is now a member of FG 2 of the VdA. He is also a member of the Saxon state board of the VdA.
