Chemnitz Christmas Market 2020

The Chemnitz Christmas market will take place with restrictions this year due to the coronavirus. It will begin on Wednesday, 25 November and end on Wednesday, 23 December. It will be open daily from 10 am to 8 pm.

There will not be a large, contiguous area this year. Five areas in the city centre are planned: Neumarkt, Markt, Jakobikirchplatz, Düsseldorfer Platz, Am Wall and Theaterplatz. In order to enable as many traders as possible to participate, only huts of seven and ten square metres in size will be provided by the city. There will also be two fairground stalls for children. Due to the current infection situation, visits can only take place with access restrictions. A registration option via app is planned. Discussions are currently taking place with a company from Saxony. It will also be possible to register directly at the access points.

Opening hours will be limited to 8 pm. This is to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, which could lead to minimum distances not being observed. There will only be mulled wine without additional liqueurs ("Schuss"). The city does not currently intend to make masks compulsory. However, this depends on the respective infection situation and the observance of the minimum distances by visitors.

Programme:

Father Christmas will visit the children every day at 5 pm. The popular Christmas fairy tale will also be performed. In cooperation with the Galerie Roter Turm, the cinema level there will be used for this. 100 visitors can watch Father Christmas and the fairy tale in a cosy atmosphere. Father Christmas is happy to welcome brave children who spontaneously come on stage and recite a song or a poem. Of course, there will also be a small gift waiting for the brave ones. Registrations or applications are not necessary this year.

Performances by brass bands, choirs and children's groups will once again provide a festive atmosphere this year. The balcony directly above the entrance to the town hall will be used for this.

Unfortunately, the mountain parade cannot take place this year.

After the end of the Christmas market, there will be the opportunity to drink mulled wine and enjoy a snack on the Neumarkt until 10 January 2021.

The weekly market will take place on the Rosenhof from 10 November to 23 December 2020.
