Chemnitz castle pond - sediment basin is being desludged
From 23 November, the sediment basin of the Chemnitz castle pond will be desilted.
In the Chemnitz castle pond, between the castle pond island and the new castle pond facilities with the Schilling figures - separated under water by two horizontal steps (so-called berms) - there is a section known as the sediment basin. This basin serves to calm the water flowing in from the Pleißbach so that the fine particles can settle. These sediments must be removed regularly so that the partially organic substances are not carried into the larger water surface of the castle pond and turn into digested sludge there.
Two possible options were examined during the preparatory planning phase. In addition to the conventional method of draining the water and dredging the sludge, the required desludging with a suction dredger and geotextile hoses, in which the sediments are subsequently dewatered, was considered as an alternative.
When the contract was awarded, the alternative solution - which has not yet been used in Chemnitz - proved to be particularly cost-effective. With this technology, the sediments are collected as a liquid solution by a suction dredger over a period of around two weeks - without having to drain the castle pond - and channelled into geotextile tubes. The hoses act like a coffee filter and retain the solid components, while the moisture is channelled back into the castle pond. After a longer dewatering phase, the sediments contained can then be disposed of largely dried.
The hoses will be laid out on the connecting path between Erich-Schmidt-Straße and Schloßteichstraße, which will be closed for the duration of the work.
It is planned that the work will be completed by 26 February 2012.
The company Oehme GmbH from Dorfchemnitz was awarded the contract for the alternative solution it offered following the public tender. The company has various references for this innovative technology, e.g. it is currently also carrying out the renovation of the "Long Pond" in Schwanenteichpark in Zwickau.
The total cost of the planning and construction work is around 165,000 euros.
