Chemnitz art commission founded

Last Tuesday, 4 February, the inaugural meeting of the Art Commission took place at City Hall.

With immediate effect, the commission will use its expertise to advise the City of Chemnitz and the City Council in the areas of art in public spaces and art in architecture. The mandate to establish the committee was issued by the City Council at its meeting on 17 April 2024 with resolution B-014/2024 "Formation of an Art Commission".

The work of the art commission will ensure transparent procedures and comprehensible decisions for measures and projects in the areas of art in public spaces and art in architecture in Chemnitz. The 14-member committee is made up of experts from the fields of art and architecture as well as representatives from administration and politics.

The most important item on the agenda of the constituent meeting, chaired by the Mayor of Culture, Dagmar Ruscheinsky, was the election of the chair and deputy chair from among the experts on the art commission.
Dr Florence Thurmes, Director General of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, was elected Chair by a majority of the eleven eligible voters. The architect Matthias Döhler was also elected as her deputy by a majority.

During the constituent meeting, the members of the expert commission were informed about the process that has taken place so far to develop the strategy for art in public space/art in architecture for Chemnitz. The strategy will consist of a concept with content-related topics on art in public spaces/art in architecture in Chemnitz and a guideline that regulates the procedures and responsibilities for measures in both areas.

In its first regular meeting, probably in May of this year, the Art Commission will continue its work on the strategy and thus have the opportunity to contribute its intentions.
