Chemnitz and the Karl Marx Head
Adult education centre: Lecture on 10 May at TIETZ
On Tuesday, 10 May, 7 to 8.30 p.m. in TIETZ, room 4.07, interested parties will be given a new perspective on the Karl Marx Monument of the city of Chemnitz. In her lecture "The city with the monument: Chemnitz and the Karl Marx Head", Veronika Leonhardt, Dipl. phil. tour guide (IHK), will talk about the historical development of the landmark.

After the Second World War, the heavily destroyed city of Chemnitz was rebuilt according to socialist urban development plans. This goal was not only honoured by the naming of the city Karl-Marx-Stadt, but a large bust of the philosopher was also commissioned. In October 1971, the huge landmark in the centre of the city was ceremoniously inaugurated in front of hundreds of thousands of people. Since then, the Karl Marx head has stood as a symbol of the city like no other monument.
Veronika Leonhardt's lecture takes a contemporary look at the former symbol of socialism, sheds light on the history of the monument's creation and reconstructs how the way this monument has been treated over the last 30 years has changed. Visitors are invited to contribute their own memories of the Karl Marx Head.
