Today, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the city of Chemnitz and the Taiwanese region of Kaohsiung at the German Pavilion at SEMICON Taiwan in Taipei. The relevant agreements had already been signed in advance by Mayor Sven Schulze and Chen Chi-Mai, Mayor of Kaohsiung. This move further strengthens cooperation between the two sides.
In the presence of Silvana Bergk, Head of the Economic Affairs Department of the City of Chemnitz, and Chang Yen-Ching, Director of Administrative and International Affairs for Kaohsiung, the agreement was officially recognised at the international trade fair.
Frank Bösenberg from Silicon Saxony and representatives from the Saxony Economic Development Agency also took part in the signing ceremony.
Through the MoU, Chemnitz and Kaohsiung aim to further expand their economic and technological ties. A key focus is on the semiconductor and microelectronics sector, which is of strategic importance to both regions.
Silvana Bergk, Head of the Economic Affairs Division of the City of Chemnitz, said: “In Kaohsiung, we are gaining a strong international partner in a forward-looking sector that is of strategic importance to Chemnitz. Our aim is clear: we want to use this exchange to develop concrete links between businesses, research organisations and institutions, and to foster new collaborations and projects as a result. The MoU is an important step towards this – and a strong signal that Chemnitz is further expanding its international network in the semiconductor and microelectronics sector.”
With its high-performing research and innovation landscape – in particular the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nanosystems ENAS – Chemnitz offers numerous companies in the fields of microelectronics, sensor technology, mechanical engineering and automation – as well as the Silicon Saxony network – offers excellent conditions for international collaborations and new value-creation partnerships. Taiwan, on the other hand, is one of the world’s leading centres for the semiconductor industry. Kaohsiung is increasingly developing into a key centre for high-tech, semiconductor production and industrial innovation. This opens up new opportunities for Chemnitz to link international value chains, initiate collaborations and further expand its access to one of the world’s most significant technology markets.
The signing of the MoU at SEMICON Taiwan sends a clear signal of the growing international network of Chemnitz as a centre for business and technology. At the same time, it builds on the existing contacts between Chemnitz and Taiwan.
“We want to connect Chemnitz even more closely with the international centres of the semiconductor and microelectronics industry. Kaohsiung offers excellent points of contact for this. It is crucial for us to develop concrete relationships between companies, research institutions and technology partners from our international contacts. This is precisely where the opportunity presented by this MoU lies: we are building a bridge between two strong industrial regions and aim to utilise it for new collaborations, investments and joint projects,” Silvana Bergk continued.
The city of Chemnitz is thus consistently continuing its efforts to internationalise the business location with the aim of tapping into new markets and partnerships.
