Chemnitz Adult Education Centre: Theme day on orchards
Theory and practice in two events on 16 September, 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
On Thursday, 16 September, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is hosting two events on the special ecological importance of orchards in the region.

Just a few decades ago, extensive orchards characterised the landscape, but today they have often disappeared or are highly endangered. The meadows with fruit trees of different ages and different species and varieties often serve as pasture for livestock and are a species-rich habitat. In recent years, they have been rediscovered for ecologically orientated agriculture as well as for personal green spaces.
Discover a Chemnitz orchard meadow, guided tour from 10 am to 11.30 am
Meeting point: NABU orchard meadow Rabenstein, Thomas-Müntzer-Höhe
A guided walk through the NABU orchard meadow in Chemnitz-Rabenstein explains the special layout of the scattered, high-stemmed fruit trees and a mown meadow. Sheep have been tending the meadow for several years and prevent the area from becoming overgrown. Old fruit varieties often provide a habitat for endangered birds and insects. The meadow orchard as a cultural landscape can be vividly experienced on this morning.

Creating and maintaining orchards, lecture from 5 to 6.30 pm
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.07
The lecture will focus on mowing and pruning fruit trees. What needs to be considered when planting, maintaining and caring for an orchard and how can ecological diversity be increased in your own garden? In addition to specific variety recommendations, a local expert will provide an overview of funding opportunities when planting a meadow orchard.
