Chemnitz Adult Education Centre records growth at the start of the semester
At the start of the summer semester on 26 February, VHS Chemnitz recorded 1696 participants in 159 courses. This is an increase in registrations of 13 per cent compared to the previous year. There is a clear upward trend in the number of participants: in 2016 there were 922 and in 2017 there were already 1502. The number of courses increased by 24 per cent. In comparison: a total of 128 courses started in 2017.
The number of registrations for German courses subsidised by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees fell slightly from 25 to 24 compared to the previous year, while the number of participants remained almost constant at 331.
Looking at the figures excluding the German department, 86 courses started in 2016, 103 in 2017 and 136 courses started at the beginning of the 2018 semester. The number of participants increased accordingly from 922 in 2016 and 1191 in 2017 to 1362 this year.
The director of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Grit Bochmann, sees the increase as a clear sign that continuing education is becoming increasingly important for the people of Chemnitz, even beyond the professional sphere.
