Checking the validity of identity documents

The registration office would like to point out that the validity of 37,000 Chemnitz citizens' identity cards will expire this year. We would therefore like to remind you to check the validity of your identity cards and passports.

It is not possible to extend the validity period of identity documents. A new application is required. The following documents must be submitted: a 35 x 45 mm photograph (suitable for biometrics) of each document, the previous identity document and the birth or marriage certificate (or family book if available).

Please note that a new visit will be necessary if the required documents cannot be presented. As the identity of the applicant must be verified, the application must be made in person.

The following fees currently apply: ID card 28.80 euros (for applicants under
24 years of age 22.80 euros), passport 59.00 euros (for applicants under 24 years of age 37.50 euros). The fee must be paid at the time of application. Approximately four weeks must be allowed from the application to the completion of the documents.

The current office hours of the registration office (Bürgerhaus am Wall, Düsseldorfer Platz 1): Monday and Friday 08:30 to 12:00, Tuesday and Thursday 08:30 to 18:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 13:00.

To avoid waiting times, citizens can book an appointment in advance. Appointments can be made via the public authority telephone number 115, but only for the registration office in the Bürgerhaus am Wall.

The office hours of the citizens' service centres and further information can be obtained by calling 115. You can find information on the Internet at www.chemnitz.de.
