Catching up after Corona: additional leisure activities during the summer holidays
Together with the Chemnitz City Sports Association and Chemnitz sports clubs, the city of Chemnitz is implementing the federal government's "Catching up after Corona for children and young people for 2021 and 2022" action programme. The federal government has made 80,000 euros available for this programme.
As a first step, additional sports activities will be offered during the summer holidays. For example, there will be three learn-to-swim courses run by the sports department at the municipal swimming pool spread over the summer holidays. The ChemCats are offering basketball sports weeks and the NINERS are organising an adventure leisure camp and a fun and games camp. There will also be taster courses for rugby, cricket and frisbee organised by USG Chemnitz.

In addition to the numerous sporting activities, the city of Chemnitz offers three programmes from the adventure education department of the Museum of Natural History. The participation fees for children and young people are also financed by the federal action programme.
"Window into the history of the earth" - a truly ancient storage medium
During the 2021 summer holidays, from 26 July to 3 September 2021, the Museum für Naturkunde will be offering a wide range of programmes for young researchers at the "Window into Earth's History" on 18 dates:
- Monday programme: The forest through the ages
We explore the question of what the forest looked like 291 million years ago and how it has changed to this day. We get creative together and develop ideas for future forests.
- Wednesday programme: Excavation detectives in action
As an excavation detective, you have the task of solving a rocky quiz. You will explore the excavation site on your own. The reward is guaranteed for patient detectives!
- Friday programme: Volcanoes - moving earth
What do your favourite sofa cushion and your hair have to do with a volcanic eruption? We'll explain it to you in this programme, and at the end we'll make a volcano erupt.
My own garden in a raised bed
Together with Holzkombinat e. V., the programme promotes communal interaction outside the home environment. The aim is to develop, build, design and plant raised beds for the family home and for the outdoor area of the Museum für Naturkunde "Fenster in die Erdgeschichte".
Making friends
Under the guidance of toy maker Therese Lakatos, children work with wood in a working atmosphere with their peers. From brainstorming to the finished product, participants test their motor skills and let their imagination run wild. The programme also supports Goal 4 of Agenda2030: Inclusive, equitable and quality education and lifelong learning for all.
